About this tool

Shows characters including and excluding spaces, line breaks, UTF-8 byte size and a live limit indicator for character-capped fields such as meta descriptions and social posts.

How to use it

  1. Paste the text you need to measure.
  2. Read the totals; the limit selector highlights when you exceed a target.
  3. Trim the text until it fits the field you are writing for.

Frequently asked questions

Does an emoji count as one character?
It is one code point but several UTF-16 units. Both counts are shown so you can match whatever your platform measures.
Why does the byte count differ?
Non-ASCII characters take two to four bytes in UTF-8, which is what databases and HTTP headers count.
